Dance is about telling stories through movement. Stories that are compelling in nature and rooted in truth. This is my art, my gift, and my purpose that I must share. I want to provide experiences that allow audiences to see the world from a different point of view while being entertained and in most cases even educated. As my medium I use a unique blend of modern, Africa, ballet, and jazz dance techniques that are a true representation of my heritage and my training experiences. My professional experiences allow me to bring an organization, and critical thinking element to my art. Always thinking ahead and planning for ideal completion encourages great quality. Everyone involved is of equal importance to me. This reminds me to keep a humanitarian component readily available when interacting with colleagues and dancers alike. My mission states that my craft was conceived with the initial concept of bridging the gap between urban life and dance theatre. My primary purpose is to promote as well as encourage diversity and individuality through all aspects of dance. While effectively engaging audiences, I am promising to tell real life stories by boldly blending technique, passion and African American culture. More specifically, I am interesting in giving a voice to the untold stories. Untold from an artistic point of view. Giving tales such as HIV in the African American community, Genocide in Africa, and the Alabama Church bombings wings, so that these tales can soar to higher heights. These wings are nothing more than creativity. I consider myself not just a choreographer, but a visionary. It was Alvin Ailey who said “I am trying to show the world that we are all human beings and that color is not important. What is important is the quality of our work.” And it was Martha Graham who said “Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion.” The combination of these two thoughts serve as an inspiration and a reaffirmation to my voice in the dance world. |
